Welcome to the University of Hawai‘i Internal Medicine Residency Program (UHIMRP) website!
I view UHIMRP as an extended family. We all work together to provide the best patient care possible, the best education for our residents and students in an atmosphere of collegiality, shared responsibility and professionalism. We are all aware of the special character of Hawai‘i, and we strive to appreciate the diversity and openness of Aloha in all that we do.
I hope that you find the information here helpful to you. Dr. Erlaine F. Bello UHIMRP Program Director
SPONSORING INSTITUTION The Program is sponsored by the University of Hawai‘i’s John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) and multiple community hospitals through Hawai‘i Residency Programs, Inc. Since JABSOM utilizes a Problem-Based Learning Curriculum, our faculty members are skilled in facilitating and encouraging resident learning.
ACCREDITATION STATUS After our last site visit in 2008, UHIMRP received a 6-year maximal accreditation and commendation for substantial compliance with ACGME RRC requirements.
BOARD CERTIFICATION STATUS Our 2009 graduating class had a 100% pass rate on the ABIM certification exam.
THE RESIDENCY Since UHIMRP began in 1975, we have trained hundreds of highly-skilled Internal Medicine specialists. While the strength of UHIMRP has traditionally been its emphasis on General Internal Medicine and Ambulatory Care, our graduates have gone on to a variety of activities, including primary care in Hawai‘i, other parts of the United States and in other countries, fellowships in every subspecialty in programs throughout the country, Hospitalist positions, academic medicine, and research.
Our curriculum fulfills ACGME Competency-based requirements in Medical Knowledge, Patient Care, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Professionalism, Practice-based Learning and Improvement, and Systems-based Practice. With our emphasis on evidence-based medicine, critical appraisal of the literature, and the ongoing need for self-education, our graduates are well-prepared for a spectrum of challenges they will face in their careers.
FACULTY There are 81 full and part-time faculty with academic appointments in the Department of Medicine, and approximately 300 board-certified volunteer clinical faculty who work with residents. One of the unique features of Hawai‘i is its multicultural character, which is also true of our residency program, patient population, and faculty. While required ambulatory rotations and inpatient teaching rounds are the responsibility of full-time faculty, we utilize community hospitals and outpatient continuity clinic sites that allow residents to interact with a variety of physicians in practice who are also dedicated faculty. Thus, residents experience a variety of approaches to patient management, as well as the traditional clinical teaching structure of university-associated programs.
MISSION STATEMENT Our MISSION is that residents, faculty and staff of UHIMRP will be dedicated to the service of our community in Hawai‘i and the Pacific through education, research and quality patient care.
VISION STATEMENT Our VISION is to become an ohana (family) characterized by teamwork and mutual respect in a supportive learning environment. We envision a future in which we are integrated with the community, responsive and adaptive to change, and internationally renowned for excellence in patient care and the quality of our residents, faculty and medical education.
