      Resident Evaluation Review Committee (RERC)

        Purpose

The Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) has identified six (6) Internal Medicine Competencies in which serve as the foundation for our Curriculum and in which all residents must demonstrate competency in before completing residency training.  These areas are:

        1. Patient Care
        2. Medical Knowledge
        3. Interpersonal and Communication skills
        4. Professionalism
        5. Practice-Based Learning and Improvement
        6. Systems-Based Practice

Residents must understand the importance of these six general competencies in the assessment of their performance.

The evaluation of residents is an ongoing process, which is felt to be one of the most important responsibilities of the residency program.  The evaluation process has many objectives: (1) ensuring that all residents perform at a satisfactory level or greater in carrying out their patient care responsibilities and teaching activities; (2) identifying areas of weakness or deficiency as well as strength, early in a resident's career, so that weak areas may be strengthened, deficiencies may be corrected, strong points may be recognized, and residents may be counseled appropriately regarding career goals; (3) ensuring that residents meet the minimum clinical competence requirements of the American Board of Internal Medicine to be admitted to the Board Examination; for those residents not meeting these requirements be so advised as early in their careers as possible so that changes can be accomplished; and (4) providing one component of continuous quality improvement for the UHIMRP.
